University of Groningen Library Toolbar : grouped Toolbar 6 in 1

The Central Medical Library (CMB) of the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) is using Conduit Toolbars for years now with its QuickSearch & CMBStudent Toolbar.

We now have launched in collaboration of the other libraries locations of the University of Groningen Library the overall general Library Toolbar http://bibliotheekrug.ourtoolbar.com/.

It is available for download and install on all Staff computers via the NAL menu.
It is pre-installed on several Student UWPs in many faculties and libraries
It offers the general Library Toolbar, but users can toggle between 5 other Librar Toolbars (Arts Library, Economics, Businesses and Spacial Sciences, FWN, QuickSearchCMB, CMBStudent)

The networked installation is unfortunately messing up the Conduit users stats.

It offers the main features of the Library websites & direct search in licenced databases, plus

Rss news channels on News of the Libraries, the University, new publications
access to Repositories
our LibGuides
Acces to NESTOR, (Blackboard)
the Proxy bookmarklet
and so much more ...

37 ways To Adjust Your Library Toolbar (or any Conduit Toolbar)

Here are just a few ways you can ADJUST your Library Toolbar once you have chosen to use it.
I am making this overview because the people creating this free toolbar software (Conduit) keep improvingand adding new ways of adjusting the toolbars to give users more possibilities. The examples given are from the NLM Toolbar.

During installation you can choose to add 3 personalised buttons to your toolbar (See the picture):

Email-notifier (to get notified of new email on multiple accounts)
Weather button (To see current and predicted Weather in specific location)
Radio-button (To select your own preferences in web-radio ánd to listen to added podcasts via RSS). The NLM Radioplayer contains the podcasts of the NLM Director Comments on MedlinePlus & the NIH Podcast.
(These buttons can at all times be de-activated or actived later on)

You can choose to set the customized websearch from the toolbar as your default search. It makes any search entered in the top-right searchbox (and from the address-bar) run through a Google-powered searchengine. This sounds good, but my advice is NOT to select this option. In my opinion the Google-powered Conduit search is the weakest spot from their toolbar-solution.
You could also set your homepage to this customized web search page, but again, this is not as strong as the normal Google search.
The NLM Toolbar is currently a set of 9 toolbars focussing on NLM services. You can at time toggle between the following toolbars. (NLM, PubMed, PubMedCentral, MedlinePlus, ClinicalTrials, DrugInfo, AidsInfo, DailyMed, HouseholdProducts) This group-function saves a lot of screen space. You just see one toolbar, but can have the power of 9. An edit-options to remove toolbars is available.
If you find any other Conduit Toolbar on the web, an easy Add To Your Toolbars function will ask you if you want to enclose the new toolbar together with the NLM toolbars.
Extensive options to adjust the Toolbar can be found right next to the NLM-logo
Very useful is the SHRINK TOOLBAR toggle option. It takes away all texts next to the buttons, using less space.

  To be abled to add `my own` stuff is one of the most heared request from our many toolbar users. And now Conduit offers this. They made it easy to create toolbar content (more on this, xml-menu's and html gadgets later on) ánd implemented a way to SHARE this through Conduit Open. These elements can be added and removed through the My Stuff-menu.

To complete this long list of options to adjust your Toolbar two small but again useful tips:

you can adjust the size of the NLM search box (the most important toolbar element with 35+ search options from the NLM!) by simply sliding it to the desired size.
At all times you can make the toolbar disappear (or appear again) via the menu View; Toolbars.

Here is a case report, step by step, on the case of the Library Catalogue of http://www.bj.uj.edu.pl/uj/katalog?cleanup=2007091813345419441&skin=default&lng=pl

At the Library of the Institute of Public Health, Faculty of Health Care, they have a library toolbar that already includes this Catalogue Search. Have a look at: http://bibliotekaizp.ourtoolbar.com/
This Toolbar includes 8 different (library) search engines, including the Catalogue.

Steps to The Widget:

Use the Conduit Toolbar ID to create a html page with a search box
Use a default test html-page, like this PubMed-page
Make it suitable for the Catalogue Search as Netvibes UWA.
Find a host for the html/xml webpage
Submit a New Widget to Netvibes.

1. Use the Conduit Toolbar ID to create a html page with a search box

Get the unique ID from the Toolbar at the "About" section, near the logo.
For this toolbar it is: CT1244566 (yes this means that there are at least 1.244.566 other toolbars out there!)

2. Use a default test html-page, like this PubMed-page.

Open it in a simple editor, like Notepad or Notepad PlusPLus.
study the file and see that there are only 3 sections to discover:

all in "body" "/body" tags (the <> tags have been replaced with " here to make this visible in the blog)
all in the "head" "/head" tags
the outer "layer" within the "html" "/html" tags

3. Make it suitable for the Catalogue Search as Netvibes UWA.

Within the Head section:

Change the Title at the right place

Fill in your Name at the Author meta name

Overwrite the Description content withwhat you want.

leave the rest as it is

Within the Body Section:

This contains a url to link users to a desired place, an image, a ALT text (mouseover) and some text that appears. Change this with your own link and stuff.
For the image url, you can use "Copy Image location"on a web image or upload an image to one of your servers or viaFlickr

Change the Conduit Toolbar ID into your ID: CT1244566
And now the most important of all: change the NAME of the search engine EXACTLY into how it appears in the TOOLBAR: Katalog UJ
Please remove the part with the div class. This will be explained maybe a next time

Now SAVE the file as :

"ALL Files" (NOT as text!), ánd

as ÙTF-8, ánd

make the extension .html

You could now test how the file looks: open it in in your browser and see how it looks!
And of course: does the search works? it should open the results in a new page.

4. Find a host for the html/xml webpage

I usually upload the file into our website server. That way it can be accessed directly by -for instance- Netvibes.
You just need some webspace to "store" this online. You do NOT have to make it publicly visible with links, but it has to be possible to open or link to the file. Many providers offer this kind of webspace for free now.

5. Submit a New Widget to Netvibes.

Go To http://eco.netvibes.com (assuming you have a Netvibes account, which every librarian should have!)
Choose Submit New Widget
Enter the url of the newly made and uploaded html-file: http://www.rug.nl/bibliotheek/locaties/bibcmb/informatie/toolbar/catalogueUJUWA.html
Click Continue
Fill in all details you like, but at least: Title , Description, Version, Tags. Tags can be very helpfull with the findability of your widget!
Make sure you AGREE, but do NOT use the first box for "Submit Now". We still have to fill in some info.
Thumbnail: I make it with Snippy and Paint. Save & Upload the image to Flickr as JPG (not bmp!)
Choose two catagories and a region if you want, but finally you can SUBMIT NOW!

Congratulations! You now have a "perfect" UWA Netvibes Library Catalogue widget!
It did not cost any money, just a little time. You have used free webtools, have complete control, and the widget can be used by anybody, in almost any platform. There is no maintenance, you can follow use by numbers of downloads. You can make the link to the widget visible on your website or anywhere you want.

Cited Ref Search in Web of Science via NeedleSearch & Toolbar

NeedleSearch & "recording" search string for Library Toolbars.
The new interface of WoS has many advantages including a different way of handling the search string.
I was abled to "record" the search string with Needlesearch.
It has our proxy setting included, but they can be removed or replaced with your own.
I made a short movie to show what I did. Unfortunately I forgot to add my beautiful voice.....
It shows how people and librarians could use Needlesearch to make a collection of search engines to start direct search. I use it to see what the exact search string looks like (no matter if forms use GET or POST).
For Conduit toolbars the word "Needlesearch" has to be replaced with "MYSEARCHTERM" to paste into the search.
You can see how easy it is to add another search engine into your toolbar.

You could easily add a PubMed Searchbox to your website to offer your users an easy search start to the most used medical database in the world.
It is not a new thing, but you could have missed it from the NLM website.

The toolbar can be downloaded for Firefox and IE.

This box, a Netvibes widget, can be added to your own Netvibes personal start page, or to iGoogle, Wndows Live and more platforms

With something they call "Grouping technology", when one of these users runs across your website, their toolbar notifies them of your toolbar, so that they can easily add your toolbar to their browser.

Making sure the toolbar notification works for your site

In order to make sure that the notification works on all pages (for example, on sites with frames or when you've hosted your Toolbar Download page on your site), you can now add a META tag to your web pages. This tag will ensure your toolbar is always detected.

This is the META tag that you can add to the HEAD section of your site:
"meta name="Toolbar" content="http://YourToolbarName.ourtoolbar.com">

You MUST replace the first " of the line into a < (otherwise I could not display this in this blog)

The URL that you enter needs to be the original download page URL that you got with your toolbar (even if you aren't using it and have an external page instead).

Here's a short overview of the Library Toolbars use within our institution:

QuickSearch CMB Toolbar (27 september 2007):
Downloads : 1114 (without the network installations). Daily use is still rising and has an average of 150 simultanous users. The number of searches has risen to around 150 per day and the number of "clicks"/activity is more and more regularly between 450 and 500.

Student Toolbar:
Downloads: 717 (without the network installations). Daily use is somewhere between 200 and 220 at this time, but still rising. This means over 200 students have their browser open at the same time with the Toolbar active on that day! The amount of searches per day is 100, and the student activity on the Toolbar is very high compared to the "general" toolbar: peaking at 750 right now.

CMB QuickSearchBox

Making searchfacilities tailor-made is relatively simple if you combine this Toolbar & simple html. The Search boxes can be published on intra-of internet.

The Library currently makes good use of www.netvibes.com and advises it's users to use Netvibes for their creation of a online "personal startpage" for news, searches, bookmarks, agenda etc.
The application has almost unlimited possibilities.
The already created Netvibes CMB QuickSearchboxes are downloaded 175 & 264 times.

Of all created medical searchboxes, MedWorm is the current leader in downloads: 566.

I think it is amazing that I (or anyone) can create a usefull tool for so many, when the resource is not even mine ;-)

As an example of possible tailor-made services, I can show the Dermatology Tab for Netvibes.
It contains:

5 newsfeeds of the latest content of their leading Dermatology journals
a searchbox for DermAtlas &
Bookmarks to Book collection Dermatologie in the library

User can choose their own preference of modules to fill their personal pages ór they can choose to use the tool from the CMB Netvibes Toolbox (a "Universe" in development): http://www.netvibes.com/digicmb.

How To Create an RSS-feed from webpages that DO NOT support it?

First, you go to your boss and tell him you think it is a good idea to MAKE the company website RSS-enabled and ask him to add this as a "must have" functionality. If needed show him examples of what RSS can do.
(If you ARE the boss, go to your IT-department and ask why your website does not support RSS!)
OR just use another publishing tool NEXT to your website to make the newspage, like Blogger and use THAT RSS-FEED to show in your toolbar (or on your website).
You could use some kind of "feedscraper" tool to see if it can get usefull info of the news page of your website (or any intended webpage).
This is however NOT an very easy job and it would need some experience with the tools to get you the info you need.

Here is an example for the Library news page of the The Institute of Public Health in the Faculty of Healthcare Jagiellonian University Medical College.
I copied this string "http://www.izp.cm-uj.krakow.pl/forum/viewforum.php?f=13" into Feedity (www.feedity.com) and clicked on Preview. This gave me a pretty good result because the forum page is a structured one.

How to Add a link button with Ask The Librarian?

Ask the Librarian: this CAN actually just be a "link button" that goes to your webpage where people can ask you for help OR if you do not have that now, you could just enter the following in the place where the url should go:
mailto: name@address.email.pl (replace this with your own email ;-)
If you copy & paste that inside that field in the new link button, it will open the users email progamm with your email already in it. Try it at my test toolbar: http://digicmb.ourtoolbar.com

New Search for Library Toolbar in Conduit Community Search

I was wondering were the nice search option in the Gallery page went, but now I discovered it again. They created a Conduit Community Search engine of their own.
They also build an a couple of nice things in the toolbar. Although others might think they do not want them. No worries, you can always turn them off ;-)

Have a look at the Toolbar Options link behind the toolbar logo, and switch to the Additional Settings.

suggest search searches from Search History (and the option to Delete stuff of course)
Send Usage Stats (You might like that, but IT could possible disagree ..)
Enable Select to Search Box: Selected text anywhere in a page, will paste that automatically in the Search Box! Now that I like very much.
Show Tooltip when Community Toolbar detected. This is pretty confusing. With this activated, you will get a pop-up whenever you browse to a site/domain that has a Conduit Toolbar installed!

Thanks to the guys from the MGAS and their Library toolbar I found out yesterday that Conduits web-based toolbar software now offers an option to GROUP more toolbars together into one!
They use it as a language switch to offer the Toolbar in English and Dutch, but you could easily use it to offer specific topic or specialisation toolbars. I like their website by the way! Great work. I wish we could do it like that ....
(Please have a look at the ZOEKMATRIX (SEARCHMATRIX) where they offer users to personalise their own startpage with flexible search boxes. Cool!)

Chat problems?

I installed the chat feature as a way to encourage the use of chat/IM among the more timid. However, it appears to be quite problematic in these ways:

In Firefox, it opens in a new tab. Then upon starting it, the FF window shrinks. Now all of this isn't so bad, but there is no indication of when there is activity. In IE7, it opens in a new window and when there is activity, that window comes to the front. Not so in Firefox.
Usernames are not always removed from the session when users close their browser or tab. Thus, when they try to start it again using the same username, they are blocked because that username "already exists".

This last problem has been quite persistent, disabling its use for me.

Has anybody else succesfully used the Conduit.com chat function? If so, did you experience these problems? And if so, what did you do to resolve them?

Finally we have succeeded in activating the Web of Science SEARCH in the original interface! With thanks to the TechSuport from Thomson! He send me a detailed file with specifics of the creation of this string. Muchos gracias!
The string I am using right now are below:

* Cited Ref Search: searches for citations of an author!

If you have the QuickSearch CMB LIbrary Toolbar installed, just do a refresh and they will pop-up. be aware that primary authentication is done by Ip-check. I have not configured this string for our proxy-server.

Clicking this link
should create a floating window when entered into a button, or menu-item in your toolbar.

With this you can create a pop-up window from the Toolbar that you can control (a little). You can set the size .
It is just a little javascript: (javascript:EBOpenPopHtml('http://www.cnn.com',300,400);
But it is maybe a possibility to use for instructional purposes, for making handouts visible, explaining things.

So far we did not succeed in making an acceptable search string for OVID interface, but now with a little hint from Karen Harker about Jumpstart url's I finally got a good one, i think.

Library toolbars made in Oslo and Trondheim

Thanks Karen Harper for your cooperation and your first blogpost on LibraryToolbar.
Let's make a list of the possible subjects we can -or want- cover!
Hopefully our cooperation will grow with people from Oslo and Trondheim. In Olso about 12 library toolbars have been created in a workshop. In Trondheim I made one for them during an extensive demo/workshop (and I was doing the work -;)
I will give an overview of the Toolbars later.

Turning this into a community

Guus had initiated an email conversation when he spotted the toolbars which we were developing on Conduit's site. He suggested that we try to develop a small community of toolbar developers for the purpose of sharing information, ideas, and resources. I accepted his offer of using his blog as the primary vehicle, and he graciously switched his blog to English to accommodate all of us who are monolingual.

In an effort to spur the information sharing here, I would like to present our just-released toolbar for use by our clients. We also have toolbars for our staff, but much of these resources are restricted to authorized users, so there really isn't much point in showing these.

I will soon be starting a list of resources and their search URLs, which I hope others will utilize when developing their own toolbars and add to the list, as well.

Other information I would like us to share include assessment methods, marketing efforts, new components, and other ways of integrating the formal Website with the toolbar.

Language shift for international cooperation!

After my presentation at the Cluj EAHIL Conference on the User Environment with demonstration of the QuickSearch Library Toolbar there was a lot of attention for the Toolbar. It still is a great "little" extra tool libraries can use to improve awareness of library services and resources.
This blog was started to share information on this free web-based application with the local Dutch libraries at the University of Groningen.
From now on the language of the blog will have to be in English because we are going to cooperate working on the Toolbar development with the Southwestern Medical Center Library.
Karen Harker and her team have created a Library Toolbar and will offer it soon to their users.
At this time there are about 100 other "Library" Toolbars. Have a look at the link in the left menu!
Maybe people from the Landspitali Hospital, Reykjavik in Iceland (with their LSH Library Toolbar) can share their experiences as well.
Maybe the Norwegian Knowledge Centre for the Health Services (Nasjonalt kunnskapssenter for helsetjenesten) in Oslo will follow also after my presentation and Workshop on Monday Januari 15th?

Je hebt het erover dat de EB best in is voor nieuwe ideeën en wijzigingen. Bedoel je met de EB de elektronische bibliotheek van de UB?
NEE, IK BEDOEL EFFECTIVEBRAND (-;)Wat is hun rol bij de ontwikkeling van de toolbar? Wij kunnen bepaalde zaken door hen laten doen, begrijp ik?

Er gaat bij sommige bestanden iets mis als je niets intypt in de zoekbalk. Laat je de zoekbalk leeg en klik je op bijv. de krantenbank, dan kom je op de website van LexisNexis, klik je op een link die je via RUG Combine hebt laten lopen (bij de CMB bijv. PsychINFO) dan kom je op een beginscherm van RUG Combine. Klik je op E-journals RUG, dan krijg je helemaal een raar scherm. Ik heb geen idee of veel mensen deze fout zullen maken, maar het is wel een beetje verwarrend allemaal.

Het is ook jammer dat Google bovenaan moet staan en niet te verwijderen is, alsof dat een belangrijk bibliotheekbestand is.

KLOPT OOK, HET IS WÉL ZO DAT DE LAATST GEKOZEN ZOEKTOPTIE ALTJD BLIJFT STAAN, DUS HET PROBLEEM IS BEPERKT. AAN DE ANDERE KANT IS GOOGLE HANDIG VOOR EEN HELEBOEL DINGEN ..., MAAR DAT IS PERSOONLIJK (-;)

Het is niet mogelijk om linken naar bestanden via de proxy-server te laten lopen, toch? Dat vind ik ook wel een gemis.

IN PRINCIPE KAN DIT GEWOON HOOR! WELKE BESTANDEN ZOU JE WILLEN PROXY-EN? DE BEPERKING LIGT HEM IN DE NATIVE ZOEKINTERFACE. GEEFT DE INTERFACE DE LINK MÉT ZOEKTERM TERUG IN DE ADRESBALK? DAN IS HET ZOWIESO GOED. SOMS GEBEUREN ER RE-DIRECTS OF ANDERE ACTIES (LOGINS, SESSIE-ID OID) DAN IS HET NIET MOGELIJK OM HET ORGINELE BESTAND TE GEBRUIKEN. VIA RUGCOMBINE KAN HET OVERIGENS ALTIJD!

Als je meerdere termen intypt in de zoekbalk, worden in bijv. Google, de catalogus en Picarta de termen netjes met 'en' gecombineerd. Maar bijv. bij een bestand als Econlit moet je er zelf 'and' tussenzetten. Type maar eens in: income migration (zonder and) en zoek dan 'ns in Econlit. Beide termen komen in het 1e zoekveld in Econlit te staan, waardoor Econlit het beschouwd als een samengestelde term en daardoor maar 3 treffers vindt. Als je migration verplaatst naar het 2e zoekbalkje, krijg je wel heel veel treffers. Ik vraag me af of mensen zich dit realiseren.

Schoonheidsfoutjes?

Hoi Els,
Kun je aangeven wat jullie "schoonheidsfoutjes" vinden?
Misschien kan ik daar nog iets op verzinnen of kunnen we een campagne starten bij EB?
Ze zijn best in voor nieuwe ideeën en wijzigingen. Ook is er veel mogelijk via de html-components feature, al weet ik daar de details nog niet van.
Ik wil binnenkort op de blog een overzicht maken van "commerciële"sofware voor Toolbars met een lijst van wensen. Als jullie al een wensen-lijst hebben, geef het dan alvast door.

Hallo iedereen,

Bij Letteren willen we de introductie van de toolbar combineren met een grote promotiecampagne van RuG Combine en een aantal CD-ROM's. Aangezien de voorbereidingen voor die campagne nu een eind op weg zijn, hebben we eind vorige week het verzoek gedaan aan onze computerafdeling om de toolbar via het novell-menu van de medewerkers aan te gaan bieden. Daarnaast hebben we een verzoek gedaan aan het RC om de toolbar ergens op de studentomgeving in een letterenmap aan te bieden.

Onze toolbar is redelijk sober geworden. Hij bevat uiteraard een zoekcomponent waarin mensen kunnen zoeken in google, de OPC (zoeksleutel alle woorden), PiCarta (zoeksleutel alle woorden), de RuG-repository en RuG Combine. Voor RuG Combine hebben we verschillende subsets gemaakt omdat we zo'n diverse populatie hebben binnen de faculteit (historici, kunsthistorici, taal- en communicatiekundigen en letterkundigen).

Daarnaast kent de toolbar een RSS-reader waarin de nieuwsberichten van onze bibliotheek staan. Vervolgens is er een component Links, waarin onze homepage ontsloten is. Tot slot is er nog een RSS-feed naar de Letterendissertaties en een component waarin de RuG-repository is ontsloten.

Stand van zaken EBR

We hadden onze toolbar nog steeds niet bekend gemaakt binnen onze faculteiten. Dit omdat we vinden dat er toch nog wat schoonheidsfoutjes inzitten en we ook wachtten op eventuele RUG-brede ontwikkelingen zoals betaalde software.
Maar omdat die ontwikkelingen waarschijnlijk nog even op zich laat wachten, is in tussentijd Femke een aparte toolbar aan het maken alleen voor Ruimtelijke Wetenschappen. Dit is een vrij kleine groep en op hen willen we het 'uittesten': wat vinden ze ervan, gebruiken ze 'm ook echt, moeten we dit verder gaan ontwikkelen of niet?
Je kunt heel veel tijd in het ontwikkelen van zo'n toolbar steken, maar dan willen we graag van te voren weten dat het ook gebruikt gaat worden en wat de wensen van de gebruikers zijn.

Wat zijn jullie ervaringen voor wat betreft het gebruik van jullie toolbar en de tevredenheid daarover? Ik zag dat die van de CMB wel veel gebruikt wordt. Hoe is dat bij Letteren?

Eindelijk!! Meerdere RSS Feeds onder één knop!!

Na heel lang zeuren op het forum door allerlei mensen, hebben ze nu eindelijk ook het RSS item zo gemaakt dat je er MEERDERE feeds aan kunt hangen, zeg maar bijna een soort feedreader. Zo kunnen wij (admins) diverse feeds eronder hangen. Dat kan veel ruimte schelen!
Helaas is het nog niet mogelijk om zo'n feedmenu een aparte titel te geven en een echte menu-struktuur kan men nog niet maken, maar je kunt niet alles in een keer hebben. Ik ben hier heel blij mee.

Ask or Google als "default" search?

EB heeft een nieuwe optie gelanceerd (om extra traffic te genereren voor hun "eigen" zoekmachine en marketting tools.)
Als je ervoor kiest om -Use our hosted search results (will enable additional features in our site), dan zoekt men in Ask.com EN krijgt als bonus in de resultaat-pagina zichtbaar ALLE DOOR ONS INGEVOERDE CUSTOM ZOEKMACHINES en BRONNEN. Zie voorbeeld!
Helaas krijg je ook onzin als Images, Groups, News & Shopping erbij...
Op de pagina staat me ook wat teveel reclame, de refine optie ziet er wel leuk uit, maar wat beperkt.
Op de Advanced Search pagina zijn de bronnen helaas ook niet zichtbaar. Dat zou pas echt geweldig zijn om een advanced search te doen en dan een of meerder bronnen te kunnen selecteren. Dat zit er niet in , daar hebben de RUGCombine voor ...!

Zoek naar "E-books" van de RUG!

Laatste toevoeging aan de CMB Toolbar is de zoekmogelijkheid naar E-books. Dus niet zoeken IN E-books, maar kijken welke er allemaal zijn.
De zoekstring voor gebruik binnen EB bestaat uit :
(z key zELEK* OF zSFX*) en ALL MYSEARCHTERM
waarbij ik gekozen heb voor de ALL optie in plaats van titelwoord omdat er nu ook naar trefwoorden gezocht kan worden.
zELEK* levert nu allerlei elektronische publikaties op. De UB gaat vanaf nu E-Books catalogiseren met zSFX* (bijv. zSFXEBSCO)

Onder de de E-books knop, staat o.a. een overzicht van MEDISCHE E-BOOKS door een combinatie van de zoekstring met de basisclassificatie 44.*

QuickSearch CMB Toolbar : progress report 2

The last progress report was on December 20th 2005.
Now also on Windows '98.
Since then the QuickSearch CMB Library Toolbar has become also available for UMCG staff using Windows '98, BUT they have to use the Firefox Internet Browser to make the Toolbar work.
Not yet on UMCG WNS
Unfortunately I still do not have permission to offer the Toolbar in the new UMCG desktop WNS ("Workplace New Style") as an application the users can choose to work with. The only workaround would be to launch Portable Firefox from a usb-stick and run it from there.....

Usage and downloads
Last week the number of downloads has reached the : 360,
Active users has risen to a concurrent max of :91 per day.
Actions taken from the Toolbar add up to almost : 20.000 from the start and about : 170 per day.
The total amount of searches : 12.712
(Thanks to a specific report from EffectiveBrand)

So the Toolbar is now available since November 1st 2005 and on 5 different ways:

1. IE installation within standard student network of the University, section Medicine. Available in Library Services. Windows XP with NAL
2. IE installation within standard staff network of the UMCG (former Faculty of Medicine). Available in Library Services. Windows XP with NAL
3. IE Download from website for use OUTSIDE student or staff network
4. FireFox download from website for use OUTSIDE student or staff network
5. for UMCG staff download from website using Windows '98, BUT they have to use the Firefox Internet Browser to make the Toolbar work.
(6. for UMCG Staff WNS to launch Portable Firefox from a usb-stick and run it from there..... , but I advise to wait for the official approval and application via the network.)

QuickLinks for Staff and Students
The section Go! now contains a sub-menu with quicklinks for students and staff of the University to -for instance- the central:
- Electronic Learning Environment (NESTOR)
- email facilities
- Oracle Calendar
- Off Campus access to network drives (NetStorage)
- MSN Messenger and Hotmail

The number of available resources for searching is still increasing, as is the total amount of e-Books.

The E-Books section, the Tips & tricks and the Info-section offer now a very useful sub-menu option. It is now possible to include the complete content -as in links to- of the Library website.

The three RSS news feeds that are available:

Library News. As soon as there is a newsitem put on the Library Website, it will show in the Toolbar
UMCG Publications in PubMed. As soon as there is a new article of an author from the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) entered INTO PUBMED, it will show in the Toolbar!
Tables of Content of BMJ, LANCET, NEJM, JAMA and NATURE. As soon as there are new articles of these journals entered INTO PUBMED, it will show in the Toolbar!
The promised short user survey has to wait,due to physical mishap.

Aanpassen Taal Toolbar

De gebruikers kiest bij het downloaden welke taal van de (help) teksten hij wil hebben. Deze keuze zit -afhankelijk van resolutie en schermgrootte- soms een beetje verstopt in het download scherm.
De bibliotheek kan kiezen welke taal "default" is in de edit-functie van de Toolbar.
Rechtsboven de de voorbeeld balk: Language, Alignment & Font!

waarbij dat laatste nummer voor de groep MEdicine staat. Voor Economy + Management is dat: 769! (Rechtermuisknop op de link van de quickset,
Copy, Past in Locatiebalk browser en achteraan kijken.
Het proxy verhaal in de Rugcombine link plakken is niet werkbaar. Binnen de RUG werkt de linkt als hierboven direct, vanwege de ip-check maar thuis MOET je toch (na het zoeken via de toolbar) eerst even inloggen in RUGCOMBINE. Hier is nog veel meer over te vertellen, maar nu even nog niet. De RC inlog is nodig om authorisatie te krijgen voor de bestanden.
Je krijgt dan niet automatisch toegang tot de proxy ...

Toegangsrechten tot RuG combine thuis

Binnen de Letterenbibliotheek zijn we nu ook bezig met het ontwikkelen van een toolbar (http://letterenbibliotheek.mylibrarytoolbar.com). Daarbinnen heb ik een aantal varianten van zoekacties binnen RuG-combine gemaakt, o.m. eentje voor kunst en cultuur, eentje voor geschiedenis en eentje voor de talen. Deze zoeacties werken op de Faculteit nu prima, maar thuis doen ze het niet. Weet iemand hoe dat kan?

Statistieken

Statistieken: helaas beperkte mogelijkheden.
Bij het edit-account van Effectivebrand zit overzicht REPORTS met info over:
- hoevaak er een download heeft plaatsgevonden
- het aantal active users per dag (mensen die tegelijkertijd de browser mét Toolbar hebben openstaan
- het aantal "acties"die ze hebben gedaan via/op de Toolbar (clicks) - er was ook een overzicht van aantal zoekacties, maar die is tijdelijk weg.

Verder heb ik laten instellen dat :
-de toolbar aangeboden wordt via NAL via netwerkbeheer aan de medewerkers UMCG (FMW-deel) PLUS het laten registreren van het aantal installaties via het NETWERK
- de Toolbar in de Centrale Studentenomgeving voor het UMCG deel beschikbaar is voor installatie. Ook daarvan staat de registratie van gebruik aan.

Rechten
Omdat niet iedereen de Toolbar mág installeren van/via het netwerk, moet je dit via Netwerkbeheer/ICT aanvragen/regelen. (Ik kom er wel achter dat cruciale updates dan NIET automatisch meekomen, zodat ik nu een nieuwe distributie via ICT Support moet aanvragen. Gelukkig is dit nog niet echt dringend.)
Voor thuis kunnen ze gewoon de download gebruiken.
